The MEINL Floatune Djembes are modeled after the West African originals, producing deep, round-sounding bass notes complemented by crisp tones and slaps. The drum's shell resonates freely, thanks to the Meinl Floatune System, which features a suspension hoop down the shell that keeps all hardware "free floating". This design allows the shell to resonate with a big open tone, giving the drum more body and tonal range.
The shallow lip in the shell where the bottom suspension hoop nests allows for easy tuning. The top hoop, around the head, is what the tension rods affect when you tighten and loosen them to adjust the pitch, which is done with the included tuning wrench.
The hefty shells of the Floatune Djembe are made of 100% hardwood staves with uniform color and grain, providing a classic warm djembe tone. The finish is not a glued-on veneer made to look like real wood, but rather the natural beauty of the wood.
The traditional goat skin rawhide head produces a classic warm, yet clear tone, while being remarkably durable. The drum's shell measures 12" wide x 24 1/4" tall and weighs about 15.9 lbs, with a 12" goat skin head and a 10" playing area.
