Meinl darbukas are crafted in the tradition of the original, mystical goblet-shaped drums found in the musical traditions of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Southern Asia. Our darbukas are constructed from thin shells in various metals, each metal imparting its own unique timbre to the different models. The heads are secured and tuned with external rings placed close to the shell, in the Turkish style. Lightweight yet powerful, the darbukas possess a deep, full bass. They are well-suited for producing high-pitched snapping sounds as well as a wide range of articulated "doum" and "tak" sounds.
The Meinl Darbuka (also known as the Middle-Eastern goblet drum) is easy to carry and play, while delivering a broad tonal range. It can produce crisp "Tek" strokes and resonant "Doum" strokes that cut through the mix with ease. This makes it a perfect choice for drum circles, live performances, or classroom settings, where you don't want to be weighed down by heavier, bulkier drums. The variety of tones the Meinl Darbuka produces can support a live acoustic band, and it's fun to explore the different playing techniques on your own.
One of the standout features of the Meinl Darbuka is the four pairs of internal jingles that give your rhythms shimmering and sizzling overtones. These jingles are located near the head and are highly responsive, without overpowering the core drum sound. You can also unscrew the tension rods completely to change the heads in moments.
